Shinkyo Bridge

Japan, Tochigi, Nikko

Description:

Shinkyo Bridge is located in Tochigi Prefecture, near the city of Nikko. The legendary bridge was named Shinkyo ("Sacred Bridge") in memory of the miracle with the monk Shodo.

This structure was a wooden, painted with bright red lacquer humpback bridge 26.4 meters long and 7.4 meters wide, and the height above the water is about 16 meters, resting on two stone foundations in the form of toria - gates in Shinto temples. It is believed that it was built in the Muromachi era (Muromachi, 1333-1573). The modern type (wooden, painted with cinnabar) acquired in 1636. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by floods in 1902.

For a long time, the bridge could only be used by relatives of the shogun and special envoys from the emperor. But after the end of the Second World War, the bridge became possible for other people. On the days of special temple festivals, magnificent processions are held on the bridge.
