The Real Japan of Takayama Shirakawa-go
Description:
Takayama’s location is part of its charm. The city lies in a small bowl, located at an altitude of 573 meters above sea level and surrounded by mountains on all sides. In ancient times, it served as a station for rest on the main road, and then turned into a city-castle with a rich history.
Takayama’s charm is given by its atmosphere, similar to that of old Kyoto. Although the city is located in the heart of Honshu Island, it is not on such a lively path, so some parts of it seem untouched by the ravages of time.
Shirakawa Go is a historical village, where a special school of Japanese backwoods - "gasshozkuri" was formed. Cool roofs made of straw, upper floors adapted for silk spinning. Great views at any time of the year, but especially good in the winter months.
