The largest Shinto temple in Japan, hidden in the depths of Yoyogi Park, was built in 1920 in honor of the great Emperor Meiji, who raised the country from its knees. The Japanese were so grateful that after his death they organized a movement to perpetuate the memory of the emperor. The Meiji-jingu temple, built in a typical Japanese style, became the pinnacle of the efforts of ordinary people. Around the sanctuary there is a park in which trees grow from all over Japan: from ginkgo to cypresses and cherry trees. Behind the temple there is a museum-treasury, where works of art and things belonging to the imperial couple are collected. There are 80 large frescoes illustrating important events in the life of the emperor and his family.
