Kantei-beo Temple

near Shinjuku-ku, Nishishinjuku

Description:

This temple is one of the most beloved and visited by tourists attractions. It is located in the Chinatown district of Tokyo and is its central temple.

The temple was founded in 1862 by a Chinese refugee who bought a sculpture of the hero of the Chinese people, Guan Yu, and set the task to build a temple here.

The temple quickly became the religious center of the Chinese community.

However, then the Kantei-bye Temple repeatedly suffered misfortune. In 1923, an earthquake destroyed it.

After rebuilding during the war of 1941-1945, it was attacked from the air and suffered a lot.

In 1981 and 1986, it burned twice in fires. After each misfortune, the friendly community returned the temple to its original form. The last major renovation of the shrine was completed in 2000.
