THE TEMPLE IN HONOR OF CHRIST’S ASCENSION

Description:

The Tokyo Orthodox Church in honor of the Ascension of Christ was founded in 1884 in Japan. The initiator was Archimandrite Nikolai (Kasatkin), who in 1871 moved to Tokyo. After the permission of Japanese officials, he buys land on Surugadai Hill, where he begins construction of the Mission headquarters, and on the second floor, a small Orthodox church.

The number of Orthodox residents grew, so the temple did not accommodate all visitors. Equal-to-the-Apostles Nicholas decides on the construction of a large Orthodox church. Having collected the necessary amount of money on donations in different cities, he starts work. The plan of the cathedral was compiled by the Russian professor of architecture M.A. Shchurupov. This process lasted for 7 years, since the previous place was not enough, made an artificial mound and strengthened it with piles.

The temple is also known as Nikorai-doo ("Temple of Nicholas"). It has been given the official status of a significant cultural monument of the Japanese state, and it attracts many Orthodox tourists.

Getting to this attraction will not be difficult, because it is located in the middle of the city, namely in the area of Chiyoda. There is also a metro station near Otyanomizu.
