Maman Spider Sculpture

Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tō kyō -to

Description:

The Maman spider sculpture (or "Tokyo Spider Maman") is one of the main attractions of Tokyo. The height of the unusual surreal sculpture made of metal is 10 meters, weight is 9 tons, while it looks quite elegant.

The author of an unusual creation is the famous sculptor Louise Bourgeois. "Spider Maman" is one of a series of similar examples of modern art scattered around the world. Even in Tokyo, in addition to Maman, there are other smaller spiders ("Maman children").

Why the spider? It is known that for the author this animal is associated with hard work, and also symbolizes motherhood (this is indicated by the laying of eggs on the abdomen of the spider). Another interpretation is the international relations (network) of Japan with different cities of the world. Louise's mother was a weaver (hence the French name for the sculpture Maman, meaning "mother"), so it is easy to trace the parallel between weaving and weaving. You can see the sculpture at the Roppongi Hills building in the Roppongi area.
