Thunder Gate Kaminarimon

Japan, Tokyo, Asakusa District, Kaminarimon Gate

Description:

The Kaminarimon Gate is the first of two large entrance gates and leads to Tokyo’s Sensoji Temple. They were built over 1,000 years ago and are a symbol of the Asakusa area.

First of all, this landmark gate is known for its huge red lantern. The statues of the god of wind and the god of thunder protect the gate on both sides, which is why the gate is called the Gate of Thunder.

The original gate burned down in December 1865. Ninety-five years later, they were finally restored. A large lantern four meters high in circumference and weighing 670 kilograms in the center of the gate is a gift from the Panasonic Corporation in honor of the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the Edo period.

From the "Gate of Thunder" leads one of the old shopping streets of Tokyo. In small shops on this street you can buy all sorts of souvenirs, gifts and sweets designed for tourists. There are also many traditional restaurants.
