Voortrekker Monument National Monument
Monument St, Pretoria 0027, South Africa 250 mW
Description:
While in Pretoria, it is impossible not to see the famous monument Voortrekker, because it comes into view almost anywhere in the city. The word "voortrekker" was used by the locals to refer to the European settlers who began the mass development of South Africa in the mid-nineteenth century. It is to these brave people that the monument of the same name is dedicated.
The opening of the Voortrekker Monument took place in December 1949. It took twelve years to build it. The monument has a square base of 40 by 40 meters. The height of the monument is still the same 40 meters. Behind its walls is the Hall of Heroes, on the bas-reliefs of which you can see all the turning points of the development of Africa.
In the center of the Hall of Heroes there is a cenotaph. The inscription reads "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" ("We are yours, South Africa").
