Day of National Mourning in South Ossetia
Description:
On this day in May 1992, a monstrous crime was committed by the armed forces of Georgia on the bypass road near the Ossetian village of Zar. Several cars carrying refugees were shot at point-blank range from South Ossetia to North Ossetia. As a result of this barbaric action, 36 people were killed, mainly children, women and the elderly. The age of the victims ranged from 7 to 70 years.
On this day, national flags are lowered throughout the country. In the churches of the Alan Diocese, a memorial service is served for the innocently killed. May 20 will forever remain a day of sadness and mourning for innocent civilians.
