Lake Bangweulu

Zambia, Northern Zambia Province

Description:

Lake Bangweulu is located in the north of Zambia and forms a water system, which also includes the eponymous swamps and floodplain. Translated from the local dialect, Bangweulu means “the place where water meets the sky”.

The lake not only attracts tourists from all over the world, but is also actively used by the local population as a source of fishing. On the shores of the lake there are many fishing villages. Many locals travel to neighboring cities to exchange their catch for basic necessities. Here you can see the life of the people of Zambia as it is, without rich tourist infrastructure and gloss.

Despite the thousand-year presence of man here, a rich animal and plant world has been preserved around the lake. On the coastal plains, countless flocks of birds can be seen covering the horizon. In order to preserve this unique habitat for the next generations of thousands of living creatures, African Parks has taken over the management of the area in partnership with local communities.
