Lake Tanganyika

Zambia, Northern Province, Tanganyika

Description:

Lake Tanganyika is one of the longest, deepest and oldest lakes on Earth. Tanganyika is the second largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Baikal.

The lake was discovered in the middle of the XIX century by English explorers of Africa Robert Burton and John Speke. The area of Tanganyika is about 34 thousand square meters. The banks represent sheer cliffs and only from the eastern part of the coast are gentle. The lake is dotted with bays and bays.

“Tanganyika” is translated from the local language as “water rich in fish”. There are a lot of fish in it, both commercial and exotic. The lake is the main source of aquarium fish. In March of each year, Tanganyika hosts an annual fishing championship.

There are also many hippopotamuses, crocodiles, mollusks and waterfowl.

Interestingly, some underwater inhabitants are very similar to marine inhabitants. This is due to the fact that throughout its history, the ancient lake has never dried up. For the same reason, the lake-sea is rich in endemic and rare species of mollusks, cyclides that lived on earth several millennia ago.

Tanganyika is also a major transport artery connecting four African states: Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi and Congo.
