Calambo Falls

Zambia, Northern Province

Description:

Kalambo Falls, a 235-meter waterfall located on the Kalambo River near the southeastern tip of Lake Tanganyika, is near the border of Zambia and Tanzania. The waterfall was first discovered by Europeans in 1913. In its vicinity, archaeologists have found tools of ancient man, dated 300,000 years BC. In 1964, the excavation area was declared a national monument.

The waterfall is one of the highest single-stage waterfalls in Africa. Downstream from the waterfall for 5 kilometers stretches a gorge with a depth of 300 meters and a width of about a kilometer.

The cliffs around the waterfall attract numerous Maraba stork colonies.

You can get to the foot of the waterfall in two ways – by car or water taxi.

To get to the waterfall by car, you need to leave Lusaka on the way to the town of Zombe and move along the border with Tanzania to the town of Mbala. The waterfall begins to appear after several kilometers outside the city. You can also leave the town of Mpulungu by water taxi, or take a small boat that runs between Mpulungu and Kasanga Park.
