National Monument of Great Zimbabwe

Masvingo, Zimbabwe

Description:

The Great Zimbabwe National Monument is one of Africa’s most impressive monuments. The monument is located 30 km from the modern city of Masvingo in southeastern Zimbabwe. From 1300 to 1450 it was the largest trading empire in Africa. The population was about 10,000 people.

Today there are preserved stone and brick ruins of the old city. Looking at the preserved walls you can see at what a high level of skill the work was done. Especially impressive are the walls surrounding the city, built without mortar, reaching a height of 5 meters.

The area of the reserve is 80 hectares. In 1986, the reserve was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
