Victoria Falls
South Africa, the Zambezi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Description:
Victoria is one of the most unusual waterfalls in the world, located in Africa. It is the result of the sharp fall of the Zambezi River into a narrow crevice 100 meters wide. In addition, it is the only waterfall in the world with a length of more than a kilometer and a height of more than a hundred meters. Its noise can be heard at a distance of 40 kilometers, and spray and fog from falling water, rising to a height of more than 400 meters, can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers. Even rainbows are formed here record - "lunar": the result of the refraction of the light rays of the moon.
The waterfall was discovered by the English physician and missionary David Livingstone in 1855, giving it a name in honor of the British Queen. The locals of Africa called this natural wonder "Moscio-ao-Tunya" ("Thundering water"), and were afraid even to approach it. For a long time, Victoria Falls was hardly visited until a railway was built in 1905.
Now it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the people of Zambia and Zimbabwe, having ceased to fear the “Thundering Water”, are successfully developing a tourist business on both sides of the river.
