Alaverdi

Excursion to the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin

Description:

It is necessary to leave early to enjoy the diversity of nature of Armenia in this region. We will pass in a circle through the north of Armenia along the route Aparan - Spitak - Vanadzor - Alaverdi - Noyemberyan - Ijevan - Dilijan - Sevan - Yerevan.

We will pass through Spitak rebuilt after the earthquake of 1988, we will reach Vanadzor (in Soviet times Kirovakan) and further along the picturesque gorge with the Debed River - to Alaverdi, see the monasteries of Sanahin - a monastery complex founded in the X century, and Ahpat (founded in 976) - an active monastery 10 km from the city of Alaverdi. Akhpatsky Monastery is a significant monument of urban planning of medieval Armenia, is distinguished by the unity and compactness of asymmetric planning, a beautiful silhouette on the mountainous terrain. Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.

In the same area, lunch in a restaurant (in the gorge, on the bank of the river), then we go through the mountains through the cities of Noyemberyan and Ijevan to Dilijan. We'll stop at Goshavank on the way.

Getik Monastery was founded by Mkhitar Ghosh with the assistance of Prince Ivane Zakaryan in 1188. It received the name "Nor-Getik", which in Armenian means "New Getik" (from "get" - "river", because of the river passing nearby). After the death of Gosh in 1213, the monastery was also called Goshavank. One of the largest cultural, educational and religious centers of medieval Armenia.

It is said that if there were forests, mountains and mineral springs in paradise, paradise would look like Dilijan. Perhaps the best place of the Dilijan Reserve is the Agartsin Gorge. In the upper reaches of the Agartsin River, 18 km from Dilijan and 6 km from the highway, the monastery of Agartsnavank is located. The oldest structure of the monastery complex Church of Surb Grigor (St. Gregory) was built at the end of the X century. fleeing from persecution monks from Western Armenia, subject to Byzantium.

In Dilijan, we look into the Old City and through the Semenov pass leading to the shore of Lake Sevan, return to Yerevan.
