Day of Motherhood, Beauty and Love
Description:
The Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God. According to the biblical scriptures, on April 7, guardian angels inform the mother of God that she will have a baby in 9 months. Hence this day is the Gospel.
From time immemorial, it is celebrated in Armenia and the Armenian diaspora as the Day of Woman, Mother, Beauty and Spring. In modern Armenia, it is a national holiday, but not an official one. On this day, men give gifts to their mothers, wives, sisters, beloved friends.
The deepest reverence that Armenians have for their mothers is well expressed in the verses of Hovhannes Shiraz:
Mother, smells like your milk.
From our soil and streams,
From happy native flowers,
Fresh fields and forests.
Mother, smells like your milk.
From ringing, clean springs,
From the pink bushes,
Lips kissing without words.
Mother, smells like your milk.
From our wines and our breads,
From your audacious sons.
