On September 4, 2008, at a meeting of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, it was announced that this day would henceforth be considered the Day of the Rescuer.

Armenian rescuers have extensive experience in emergency situations. In 1988, they, along with thousands of other volunteers from across the Soviet Union, saved the lives of many northern Armenians affected by the earthquake. The rescuers of Armenia played a huge role during the brutal war in the early 90s. Thanks to the heroic actions of many of them, hundreds of people were saved, and thanks to the efforts of rescuers, the country was cleared of minefields.

Among the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, a special role is occupied by military doctors - people who, under the whistle of bullets, saved their comrades, sometimes at the cost of their lives.

Hero of the Soviet Union - medical officer Sergei Vartanovich Grigoryan - one of these heroes.
