The tradition of celebrating the New Year on January 1st was fixed in the Armenian calendar not so long ago. In the western part, on the territory of Cilicia, in some Armenian colonies of foreign countries of the 19th century, the New Year was celebrated on January 1.

However, until the beginning of the 20th century, in some eastern regions of Armenia, parallel to the New Year, the Armenian New Year – Navasard – was celebrated with great enthusiasm and warmth, and on January 1 they limited themselves only to congratulations.

Over time, the Armenian people began to approve the New Year on January 1.
