Khor Virap - Areni Wine Village - Bird Cave - Noravank Monastery
Description:
Khor Virap Monastery is a landmark historical place, because it was here that in 301 the ruler of the country converted to Christianity, making it the state religion. Today in Khor Virap you can visit the Church of the Most Holy Mother of God, go down to the underground prison where St. Gregory the Illuminator was kept, admire the melting peak of Ararat in the blue haze.
Areni Wine Village - The first mention of the settlement, which is now called Areni Village, dates back to the fifth century AD. The art of winemaking in Areni goes back centuries – here they have always loved and were able to make good wine. The village is famous for a special variety of grapes, which, according to local residents, can not be found anywhere else in the world. Arenians are proud of their grapes, and hundreds of guests regularly come to taste fine wines.
Bird Cave is the oldest landmark of Areni village. Found 15 years ago, in 2007, by archaeologist and scientist Boris Gasparyan, Areni Cave is located near the village in a rock at an altitude of about 1100 m above sea level, and its area reaches 500 square meters. There found the wreckage of dwellings and artifacts 5,000 years ago: adobe structures, many fragments of ceramic utensils, human remains - this is only a small fraction stored in the bowels of the cave.
Noravank Monastery (Church of St. Baptist) was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, a former abbot of the monastery in Vaganavanka. The monastery complex includes the Church of St. John the Baptist, the chapel of St. Gregory with a vaulted hall and the Church of the Holy Mother of God.
