The First See of St. Echmiadzin

Vagarshapat

Description:

The Cathedral of St. Echmiadzin is located in Armenia at a distance of 20 km from the capital. It is considered the oldest temple in the country. In general, it was built around the beginning of the 4th century, but it has retained its appearance since the 7th century. Painting of this cathedral was engaged in the 18th century artist Nagash Hovnatanyan, at the end of the century the painting was supplemented. According to the legend of local residents, the cathedral was built on the place where Jesus came to earth, so the main altar in the temple is called the Altar of the Descent. It contains several significant relics (for example, the Spear of Longin, a particle of Noah’s Ark, etc.). The cathedral is a world heritage site.
