Gyumri - the northern capital of Armenia
Description:
This tour covers the quarters of old Gyumri. We will walk along the old streets of the city, admire the original houses, taverns and museums, the architecture of which has absorbed the styles of folk and European architecture, creating a completely new character of the architecture of Eastern Armenia.
Gyumri is the second largest city in Armenia, where national traditions are rooted in ancient times, and the color inherent in this city is manifested in everything - in historical monuments, typically Gyumri streets and in the acute sense of humor inherent in the residents of Gyumri. From here comes the beloved Frunzik Mkrtchyan, known to all for the film “Mimino”.
During the walking tour we will walk through the streets of the colorful capital, visit the Church of the Seven Rahns and the Church of the Holy Sign. We will see the famous Black Fortress, built in the early 19th century, when Gyumri was still called Alexandropol, in honor of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna.
And if very little remains of old Yerevan (Erivan), then Alexandropol has been preserved perfectly, remaining in fact the only ancient Armenian city.
Gyumri was twice destroyed by strong earthquakes in 1926 and 1988. Traces of the last earthquake are still visible, but the city is gradually reborn like a Phoenix.
Not far from Gyumri is the monastery complex Arichavank, which we will visit.
