Garni, Geghard and Khor-Virap monasteries

The tour begins with a visit to the Geghard Monastery (Armenian - spear). The mountains surrounding the monastery are like powerful guards, who are called to protect the greatest value of Christians – Longin’s spear. The incredible history and unique architecture of buildings carved right in the rock is striking. Then we will get acquainted with the ancient fortress of Garni and see the only, in Transcaucasia, restored ancient temple, Roman bath and many other buildings of different time periods. Of particular admiration is the view of the Azat River gorge, where there is a rare natural phenomenon called the “Symphony of Stones”. Further, our way lies in the Ararat valley, where the famous Khor-Virap monastery is located. This is a special landmark of the birth of Christianity in Armenia. Once there was one of the ancient capitals - Artashat and Grigory the Illuminator sat in the Khor-Virap (deep dungeon) city prison for 14 years. It is known that the two apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew met on the territory of this city. Geodetically, it is the closest point to Mount Ararat (25 km) of modern Armenia. The historical and spiritual significance of the monastery cannot be overestimated.

Tsaghkadzor, Sevan
