1 day in Yosemite: how to see the main attractions of the valley in one day
Yosemite is one of the first national parks in the United States and one of the most picturesque places on the planet.
If you only have one day, concentrate on Yosemite Valley: the most impressive waterfalls, observation decks and trails are concentrated here - and most of the points are located close together.
A few facts that do not hurt to remember: the park covers almost 1,200 square miles (almost all of it you will not cover in a day), and some sequoias in Mariposa Grove are more than 3,000 years old. We spent two weeks in Yosemite and in this guide we show you what you can see in a short visit.
Short list of places from the route

The best thing you can see and do in a day
Swing Bridge Viewpoint
Head here first thing – it’s a great point for a first impression of Yosemite. The bridge and picnic area offer one of the best views of Yosemite Falls. When we were in June, due to the historic flood, the Merced River turned into a real lake, and the waterfall was beautifully reflected in the water - the sight was remembered for a long time. In normal months, such a reflection may not be, but the place is still worth stopping for a few pictures and inhaling mountain air. Yosemite Falls is 2,425 feet (739 meters) high and one of the highest waterfalls in the world.
Mist Trail (Mist Trail)
Next to Mist Trail. This is one of the most popular trails in the park, so arrive early to find parking and avoid crowds. Parking is convenient in Curry Village or Yosemite Valley Trailhead Parking – the second option is closer to the beginning of the trail and saves about 10 minutes on foot; Curry Village has a cafe if you want a snack before or after the hike.
On Mist Trail, there are two major attractions: Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall. For sports tourists, it is recommended to climb at least to the top of the Vernal Fall - the view is worth it. A less busy option is to stop at the bottom and admire the rainbow at the base of Vernal Fall. The trail gives a set of views: if you continue a little further, you will see the views of Nevada Fall and Liberty Cap; you can climb to Clark Point for an even higher angle of Vernal Fall, and then return via the John Muir Trail. In total, the walk will take 2-3 hours, depending on the pace and chosen route.
Practical tips for Mist Trail: the trail is moderately difficult, there is a climb - take water, snacks and reliable shoes. A poncho or light raincoat will come in handy: Vernal Fall has a lot of splashes, hence the name of the trail. In some areas there are fences, so photos near the edges are safer, but care and caution are still required.
Short tips and logistics
You won’t see the entire park in one day (it’s huge), but you’ll be able to manage most of the valley’s business cards.
If you want to add Mariposa Grove and see ancient sequoias (there are trees older than 3,000 years), plan a separate time or day.
Plan an early start to avoid crowds on popular trails and a chance to find parking.
A local guide will not only tell interesting stories and give you the best angles, but also help with security, weather and logistics – especially useful for a short visit.
