What to do in 1 day in Mongolia: statue of Genghis Khan, lunch in a yurt and Terelzh Park
If you Mongolia Just one day - how to spend it so as not to regret the time?
I came across this question myself during a short stop after a trip to China. Mongolia is huge, and it will take a long time to get acquainted, but even one busy day can leave a great impression.
I decided to join a one-day tour. The tour included transport, lunch and an English speaking local guide who along the way told the story and local details - it really added depth to each location. This platform also has options for 2- and 3-day tours if you want to stay longer.
Route and impressions
- Statue of Genghis Khan
We started with a trip to a giant equestrian statue of Genghis Khan near Ulaanbaatar - about an hour in a comfortable minivan from the city. It is one of the country’s most famous landmarks and the largest equestrian statue in the world: a steel figure about 40 meters high, completed in 2008. It stands on the observation center, where there is a small museum, a cafe and a souvenir shop.
In the basement of the museum, the guide spoke about the Mongol Empire and showed artifacts ranging from weapons to a golden paise (a diplomatic token used by Mongolian officials). Then we went upstairs, where the views of the plains open and you can see the face of the great khan up close. On my trip, the elevator was broken, and I had to climb narrow stairs - and the top is very crowded.
Tip: if you want to avoid crowds, it is better to immediately climb to the observation deck, and only then inspect the museum below - the guide will help to rebuild the route.
At the entrance, we were offered to hold a steppe eagle — these birds are trained to hunt — and this was included in the program for free. They also offered to ride a camel; I missed it, but if you haven’t seen it before, you can try it.
- Lunch in the yurt.
After the statue, we drove into the yurt of one of the nomads. There tried cheese and cream from yak - rich and unusual tastes that are worth trying at least once. The owner of the yurt was not just a shepherd: once he was a national champion in horse riding. Mongolia In his yurt hung medals and photographs. Feed mainly lamb, as is customary in the local cuisine, and the atmosphere of the yurt will give an idea of the traditional way of life.
- Gorhii-Terelj National Park
Further along the route, Gorkhi Terelj is one of the most picturesque parks near Ulaanbaatar. Here you will find intricate boulders, pine forests and open landscapes – a great place for walks and photos. One of the park’s iconic sites is the rock formations, often referred to as “Turtle Rock,” which are easily recognizable by their shapes. The park is great for short tracks and relaxing in nature.
- Aryapala Monastery
In the park we also visited the monastery complex Aryapala, a quiet place for walking, contemplation and, if desired, a short meditation. The view from the hills around the monastery and the atmosphere give an idea of the spiritual side of modern Mongolian life.
Why Guided is Better
The local guide not only organizes logistics (road, order of visits), but also tells stories, explains the meaning of rituals, introduces the owners of yurts and explains what can and cannot be done. In my case, the guide suggested taking the option with an eagle, explained the symbolism of “paise” and made the trip lively and informative – little things that are easy to miss.
Practical advice
Book through trusted platforms – the tour often includes a transfer, lunch and guide.
Start early to catch up to the main influxes of tourists and, with luck, take the elevator on the statue.
- Take a warm thing - on hills and in open steppes it can be cool even on a sunny day.
If you are interested, choose a 2-3-day tour to take your time and see more regions.
In one day you can see really iconic places around Ulaanbaatar: the monument of Genghis Khan, a genuine nomadic yurt, picturesque Terelj and the monastery of Aryapala. This will not replace a full trip to Mongolia, but will give a vivid view of the country and leave the desire to return. With a local guide, the day will be richer and clearer - I recommend.
