Dhigura is a budget paradise in the Maldives: how to get there, where to live and what to see
Dhigura is one of those quiet Maldivian pearls that few people have heard of, but which fall into the heart.
This is a local island without expensive water villas, but with kilometers of white beach, green coconut palms and family mini-hotels - rooms here can be found from about $ 70 per night.
We also visited nearby Fulidhoo – both islands were similar, but different and both gave a lot of impressions.
Why you should go
Real Maldives nature without the glamour of resorts.
A great option for traveling on a limited budget.
- High chances to see a whale shark and beautifully dive with a mask - and with a local guide, the chances of seeing marine life are even higher.
How to get there (all the facts you need to know)
Airport: First you arrive at Male International Airport (MLE). Dhigura is located about 100 km (60 mi) from Male - the island itself has no airport.
Public speed boat: the main and most affordable way. By time - about 2 hours, the approximate cost is about 50 USD one way (children over 3 years old pay as adults). There is usually a toilet, luggage and free water on board. Boats depart from Male: at 11:00 and 16:30 (Friday at 10:00). Return flights from Dhigura: 6:30 and 13:30 (Friday 13:45). On the way there will be a short stop on the island of Dhangethi. Schedule changes – be sure to check the exact time at your hotel before departure.
Charter/private boat: more expensive, but more convenient if you need direct departure from another island or flexible time. This transfer can usually be arranged through a hotel.
Domestic flight + boat: Villa Air / FlyMe operates a 20-minute flight from Male to Maamigili Airport (VAM), then ~5 minutes by taxi to the pier and about 20 minutes by speedboat to Dhigura. Flights are usually 3-4 a day. Ticket prices start at ~170 USD for adults and ~85 USD for children under 12 years of age; children under 2 years of age fly free of charge. Often the price includes a speed transfer.
Seaplane: the most picturesque, but also the most expensive option - from about 250 USD per person, a flight of about 30 minutes.
Useful details
Book a boat ticket through the hotel and pay on arrival with a card - so you do not have to carry a lot of cash.
The schedules of different operators change, so double check the time and the company in advance.
If the sea is turbulent, a domestic flight may be the only option.

Things to do.
Long walks on the white beach and sunsets, from which breath stops.
Snorkeling and diving – Mantas and whale sharks are common off the coast; guides and local fishermen know the best places and animal behavior.
Fishing with locals, trips to neighboring islands, photo walks and observation of the life of the local community.
Excursions and tours are best taken with a local guide - he will show the hidden beaches, tell you where it is safer to dive, and tell the stories of the island.
How much to plan
For a quiet acquaintance with the island is enough 3-5 days. If you want to devote time to diving or trips to neighboring atolls - from 7 days.
Best time to visit
The classic tourist season in the Maldives is the dry season, but on Dhigura the beaches are good most of the year. Check the weather conditions before traveling.
Tips with the cherry on the cake: even if you’re driving yourself, hire a local guide. It will not only speed up the experience of the island and increase the chances of encountering marine life, but will also reveal stories and places that are not in the guidebooks.
