How to change your name abroad?

Abroad, Russians have the opportunity to change their surname, first name or patronymic, as well as all these data at the same time, without the need to specify a valid reason.

To do this, Russian citizens apply to the registry office in Russia or to the consulate / consular department of the Russian Embassy abroad.

The procedure takes from one to three months.

To find out the current list of documents to replace the name, it is better to contact the consulate. It can usually be found on the website of the diplomatic mission.

Limitations

There are restrictions on choosing a new surname, first name or patronymic. Such options cannot be selected if they contain:

- Numbers, alphanumeric symbols, numerals, symbols or signs other than a hyphen.
- Sexy words.
- Indications of rank, position or title.

There are no other restrictions in the law.

How to change your name abroad?

Contact the consulate or consular department of the embassy, as they perform the functions of the registry office outside Russia. You won’t need a residence permit from another country – you can change your name even as a tourist.

However, I recommend that you consult the border and immigration authorities of the country in which you are located. This will help to find out whether there will be problems with the visa or residence permit, as well as what documents will need to be provided upon departure.

Fill out the application with the following information in the form:

- Current surname, first name and middle name.
- Date and place of birth.
- Citizenship.
- Nationality (if desired).
- Place of residence - specify the address of registration in Russia.
- Marriage status.
The name of the registry office that made the registration.
If you have minor children, indicate their surname, first name, patronymic, date of birth and details of the registry office.
- New surname, first name and middle name.
Reason for a change - for example, you want to change your last name because of unpleasant associations, dream of having your mother's last name or have another reason.
- Date and signature.

Gather a package of documents.

In addition to the application, you will need:

- A foreign passport.
- Birth certificate.
Certificate of marriage (if any).
Certificate of dissolution of marriage (if you want to return your premarital name).
Birth certificates of minor children (if any).
Documents confirming the change of data, if the surname, first name or patronymic in the passport differs from those indicated in the birth certificate.

Wait for your application to be considered

The decision to change the name is not made at the consulate - the documents will be sent to Russia for verification.

The period of consideration is one month, but if there is a valid reason, the registry office can extend this period for another two months.

How do I know if a name change has been approved?

Contact the consulate where you applied – this can be done in person, by email or by phone. If your application is approved, you will be given a certificate of change of name.

In case of refusal, you will receive a certificate explaining the reasons.

Is it possible to change the name, surname or patronymic of a child abroad?

To change the surname, name or patronymic of a minor, the consent of the parents, guardians, adoptive parents or guardians is required. The exception is when the child is legally capable, for example, if he married before the age of 18.

Parents or guardians can change the names of children under 10 without their consent. From the age of 10, this procedure requires the approval of the child in free form. From the age of 14, the child has the right to independently apply for data change, but this will still require the consent of the parents.
