Mercy Island: 12 best experiences on oyster island

The cozy Mersey Island lies just 10 miles from Colchester, Essex.BritonsIt feels like a different reality. It has its own magic: the place really "becomes" an island several times a month. If you don’t come by boat, you can only get there by the ancient Roman pontoon path – the Strood – and that’s what gives Mercy an almost fabulous charm.

Another feature: the island is the birthplace of the Colchester oyster, and its shape is almost like that of the oyster itself. Come at least for a day, at least for a week - the impressions will stay for a long time. And if you want to get a deeper feel for the place, take a local guide: he will tell the legends of the Romans, tell you where the freshest oysters are and why the wine here is tastier due to the local climate.

Best things to do on Mercy Island

1. Watch the time of the tides before leaving

Merci is an estuary island connected to the mainland by the ancient Roman route Strood. Tide times here are the most important thing to check before traveling. It is recommended to consider about 90 minutes before and after high tide to cross the Strood safely. In practice, the road is usually blocked at a water level of about 5 meters or more; this surface does not occur constantly - more often twice a day for about one week a month, and sometimes the weather changes the situation faster than it seems. People and cars often get stuck – in addition to the danger to life, salt water can seriously damage the car. Tip: negotiate with a guide or go by boat if you are not sure about the time of the tides.

2. Taste the wine at Mersea Island Vineyard

Legend has it that the Romans grew grapes here – today Mercy has its own vineyard, founded in 1985. It occupies about 10 acres, grows five varieties of grapes and produces about 20,000 bottles a year. Winemakers produce dry white wines, sometimes sweet dessert and sparkling wine according to the traditionnelle (Methode Champagnoise) method. Tasting takes place in the courtyard of the winery cafe for a small fee; there is also a cozy cafe. The winery is adjacent to Mersea Island Brewery. Booking isn’t usually necessary, but with a guide you’ll get more context about varieties and technology – and it’ll noticeably improve tasting.

3. Stay the night - feel the island differently

The night on Mercy is a different angle: the road periodically goes under water, the unique silence of the estuary awakens. Here are three typical housing options worth considering:
Broman’s Barn is a charming ancient barn bungalow near the reserve; quiet and atmospheric.
Island House is a great option for family or friends; convenient location and parking for four cars.
Hexagon - unusual placement in a reconverted radar tower with stunning views.
Book in advance: accommodation diverges, and with a local guide overnight makes sense - he will show the best sunsets and safe trails at low tide.

4. Rent a beach heath for the day

Renting a traditional English beach hute is the quintessence of a holiday on Mercy. This is a simple and incredibly pleasant way to spend the day by the water: hide from the wind, have a picnic and watch the tides. Hutes are often painted in bright colors and create a special mood on the coast. A local guide will tell you where to stay and which parts of the beach are safer for children and swimming.

Note: Always check for up-to-date tides and facility operating hours. With a local guide, you’ll see Mercy deeper, safer and more interesting.
