Nuka Molas – “Jurassic Park Island” in Flores: how to get there, what to see and why to take a local guide

Nuca Molas is a small island off the coast of Flores. (Indonesia), which for the riot of wild, “exotic” nature is often compared with the frames from “Jurassic Park”.

If you are traveling in Flores, planning a trip to Komodo or going to the village of Wae Rebo, the Nuka Molas call is definitely worth adding to the itinerary.

Why should I go?

- Landscapes are impressive: sharp hills, beaches, mountains visible in the distance - you can climb a lighthouse or climb one of the peaks for panoramic views of the "mountain in the middle of the island".
The place is remote, so there are usually few tourists here - an ideal shelter for those who love nature without crowds.
The traditional village of Vae Rebo is located nearby, so you can combine both points in one trip if you wish.

How to get there

Plane to Flores

Fly to Komodo International Airport (LBJ code) in Labuan Baggio - this is the nearest airport to Nuka Molas. There are daily flights from Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur airports, and the flight from Bali takes only about an hour. The most convenient way to search for tickets is through aggregators like Skyscanner.

2) Road to Dintor (Dintor)

From Labuan Baggio to the village of Dintor - the starting point for the island - you will have to travel 4-5 hours on uneven roads. Options:
- rent a scooter and drive yourself (I do not recommend - the roads are very heavy and the journey will take a long time, even for an experienced motorcyclist);
- hire a private driver with a car;
- join an organized tour.
I was on the roadtrip myself and chose a private driver, which is optimal for comfort. The approximate transfer price from Labuan-Baggio Airport is about 1-1.5 million rupees one way.

(3) Boat from Dintor to Nuka Molas

When you get to Dentor, the island will already be visible from the shore - an impressive and photogenic community in the distance.

Organized tour - option for convenience

If you are not on a long road trip, it makes sense to choose a 2-day tour: it usually includes a transfer from Labuan Baggio, meals, overnight stays and an English-speaking guide. This is the easiest way to watch Nuka Molas without too much logistics.

What to expect in place

Lighthouse and hills, which you can climb for panoramas;
Stunning views of the mountains and the ocean in one frame;
- Minimum crowd - good conditions for a quiet walk and photos.
Advice: take water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes for lifts.

Why take a local guide?

A local guide will not only point out the safe and picturesque trails, but also tell about the history of the island, local legends and tell you how to combine Nuka Molas with a visit to Wae Rebo or other points on Flores - this will enrich the experience and save time.

After Nuka Molas, I continued the road trip to Flores - Ruteng, Bayawa, Ende and other places.

Nuka Molas isn’t the easiest item in logistics, but that’s what makes it so memorable. If you love wildlife and a little adventure, plan a trip – and consider a local guide to make it even richer.
