Searching for Ciudad Perdida: 4-Day Track to Colombia’s Forgotten City

Track to the Forgotten City (Ciudad Perdida) - a real "bucket list" for fans of adventure in the city. Colombia. The ruins of the ancient city, built by the Tayron people more than 1,000 years ago, lie deep in the jungles of the Sierra Nevada - and you can only get there by a trail accompanied by a guide.

Briefly on the facts

Distance: 49 km round-trip (≈30 miles)
- Height gain: 2,650 m (8,700 ft)
Maximum height: ≈1,190 m (3,900 ft)
Duration: usually 3-5 days (usually 4 days)
- Complexity: high
- Format: fully organized, with meals and overnight stays in camps

How to get there

The mountains to the Forgotten City begin near Santa Marta, in northern Colombia. Direct flights to Santa Marta fly daily from Bogota, Medellin and Pereira - about 1.5 hours on the way; it is convenient to search for tickets through Skyscanner. The tour usually includes a minivan transfer from Santa Mart to the beginning of the trail and back, so the logistics are simple. If you are looking for a hotel in the city before or after the track, I recommend Hotel Boutique Casa Chunuu.

What to expect from the track

The track is a fully accompanied trip with overnight stays in camps, where there are beds and mosquito nets, three meals a day and the care of guides. This is “back and forth” with daily transitions of 4-7 hours; you can choose 3, 4, 5 or even 6 days, but for most, the 4-day option is optimal: enough time to see the main thing and not “burn”.

Day schedule and itinerary

Usually the rise at 5:00 in the morning, the daytime activity ends by 15:00-17:00, but during breaks a lot of bathing in the rivers, rest and snacks is not a constant march. There are river crossings at each bottom of the track, but now bridges are built over most of them, so you don’t have to wade as before.

Why a guide is important

Local guides not only help with the route – they explain the tairon culture, tell about the life of the Sierra Nevada communities and show what you are likely to miss. With a local guide, visiting Native American villages and ruins takes on much more meaning and depth.

My experience (the beginning of the track)

My track started at 7:00 when we were picked up from a hotel in Santa Marta. My cousin and his wife walked with us; first we visited the tour company office in the city, had a snack and met the group. There were 12 people in our group – 10 tourists and 2 guides: most were Dutch, there was a German couple and a few Americans (we). We went deep into the Sierra Nevada, visited Indian villages, crossed rivers and bathed daily, walked so that by evening the feet hummed — but the impressions only intensified.

Who's right?

If you love nature, history and are not afraid of physical exertion – the track is for you. For those who are limited in time and very prepared, the 3-day option is suitable; if you want more time in the mountains and communication with local communities, take 5-6 days. But for most travelers, 4 days is the perfect balance.

Two lines of advice

Take spare socks, light waterproof shoes and respect for local communities. And find a tour with experienced local guides - they will turn the track into a real journey into the past.
