Summer 2023: routes, directions, trends of rest

Before the start of the summer holiday season, Maya Lomidze, Executive Director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, spoke at the webinar “The Future and Opportunities of Domestic Tourism – 2023”.

The main trend to which the tourism market has adapted over the past three years is the impossibility of strategic and long-term planning. This state of affairs is related to consumer behavior, as well as objective factors and processes.

Maya Lomidze: Current trends are not long-term. We can talk about trends until the end of the summer season-2023, while maintaining the existing initial factors. These are the solvency of tourists, the openness of destinations, including Russian ones, preferences and depth of sales, as well as macro-geopolitical factors that affect the behavior of tourists.

Summer 2023. Trends

  • low depth of sales (2-3 weeks, maximum, month),
  • stable level of bookings in the premium holiday segment (sales depth – 3-4 months before the date of arrivals).

This applies to all areas, including Russia. This trend was formed in 2020, strengthened and cemented by now.”

  • dynamic pricing (in transport, hotel sector or tour operators, the price is formed depending on consumer demand). The average cost of rest in any direction is difficult to name, since it depends on the specific demand for a specific date.
  • request for safe rest. People on vacation want a sense of security and tranquility, so most often choose directions near the house on water bodies, so that if necessary, you can quickly return home.

  • Demand for short trips near home.

  • increasing the share of family tourism in the organized segment of the tourism market

  • the desire to spend money on vacation - to give them for impressions, emotions, excursions, purchases, for complete relaxation.

Two conflicting trends

There is a growing number of tourists who are willing and willing to travel long distances.

On the other hand, due to the shortage of car spare parts, in an effort to minimize the risks of damage or wear of their vehicles, tourists tend to choose other modes of transport.

Demand for Crimea?

According to Maya Lomidze, requests for Crimea quite a lot, but in terms of sales, the peninsula did not enter the top five, despite a decrease in prices by 5-10%.

Experts suggest that the demand for Crimea will be 25-30% lower than last year.

The situation with burning proposals

Currently, there are no burning tours available, and what is offered under this slogan is a marketing move. For the appearance of these “burning” proposals, certain circumstances must arise (for example, a sharp devaluation of the ruble).

" . Today, demand is not forming far ahead, nor is there an imbalance of supply and demand.”
