The Tula Kremlin is the oldest building in Tula and is known as an ancient citadel on the border of the “wild field”, which protected the southern borders of the Moscow principality from attacks by the Crimean horde. The foundation of this historical building dates back to 1507, when its construction began by decree of Grand Duke Vasily III. In 2020, the Tula Kremlin will celebrate its 500th anniversary.
History of the Kremlin
The Kremlin was founded in 1507 by order of Grand Duke Vasily III and completed in 1520. Unlike many other fortresses, it is located on a low-lying area on the left bank of the Upa River.
The Kremlin’s defensive power is concentrated in nine towers outside its walls. Four round corner towers (Nikitskaya, Spasskaya, Tainitskaya and Naugal) are deaf, while four rectangular passage towers (Odoevskaya, Pyatnitskaya, Ivanovo and Vodianaya) are located in the center of the walls. On the upper floors of most towers there are hinged loopholes - mashikuli, designed to shell the enemy at the foot of the walls.
According to the Pistons Books of 1587-1589 and 1685, the territory of the Kremlin was densely built up. Here were located all the government institutions of Tula at that time, including the voivode's order hut, the provincial hut (police body), the prison, as well as the voivode's yard and the courts of bishops.
There were temples in the Kremlin: in the XVI century - the Church of the Archangel Gabriel and the Assumption Cathedral, and in the XVII century - a stone cathedral in the name of the Assumption of the Most Holy Virgin. In addition, within the fortress were placed the siege yards of boyars, nobles and their children, who had patrimonies and estates in the Tula district. In peacetime, the trustees of the landowners lived in these yards, who monitored their property.

Peculiarities of the Kremlin
Tula fortress became one of the first stone-brick fortifications in the Russian state.
After that, you can walk along the Kazan embankment and Tula "Arbat" - Metallistov Street. During the promenade, you will have the opportunity to visit shops, dine in a restaurant, cafe or pastry shop. Also from the pier on the embankment, you can go on a half-hour excursion along the Upe River.
Sit in the rotunda - this is a favorite place of all wedding motorcades in Tula: from the rotunda there is a beautiful view of the embankment, the river, and on the opposite bank - the Museum of Weapons, which is located in a magnificent building resembling the heroic helmet of an ancient Russian warrior (the museum building was opened in 2012).
The museum presents an invaluable collection of firearms and cold weapons of Russian and foreign production. Studying the expositions, you can learn about the evolution of design ideas.
The exhibits of the museum are unique: many have a history of several centuries.
Kazan embankment is a pedestrian street in Tula, stretching along the old lady of the Upa River next to the Tula Kremlin. It got its name in honor of the Church of the Kazan Mother of God, which was located at the western wall of the Kremlin, not far from the Carol Tower. The embankment is designed in two levels: there are no fences at the lower level, and residents can easily touch the water (the depth of the river is 1.5 m). The second level is a bridge with observation platforms.
On the territory of the embankment, comfortable areas for walking and recreation have been created, including gazebos, benches, pavilions, restaurants and cafes. There is also a lilac garden, which was laid in April 2019 as part of the improvement of the embankment.
In addition, on the embankment there are areas for active recreation: children's sports and playgrounds, a canopy for table tennis, as well as courts for basketball, football and hockey. For fans of cycling there are bike paths.
There are places for performances, including an amphitheater by the water, stands among flower beds and a stage by the Kremlin. In the warm season, an open-air cinema, bicycle and boat rental, concert venues are planned on the embankment. In winter, slides and skating rinks will be organized here in the riverbed.
Metalista Street is a pedestrian street located in the Central District of Tula and is one of the oldest in the city. It begins at the Pyatnitsky Gate of the Tula Kremlin and ends on Soviet Street. The street changed its name several times: in the XVI century it was called Pyatnitskaya in honor of the Paraskeva Friday church, which was nearby. At the turn of the XVI-XVII centuries, it received the name Nikolskaya, and by the end of the XVIII century it returned to its former name.
The modern name – Metalista Street – was given in 1924. This name is associated with the Tula branch of the Moscow Metalworking Society (Union of Metalworkers), which was located in the house No. 5, owned in the XVIII century by merchant wife Ekaterina Nazarovna Nasedkina. In the immediate vicinity was the tea Union of metalworkers.
