Lake Gippsland – Fire from the Underworld

Gypsland Lakes, Lakes National Park, Loch Sport Victoria 3851, Australia

Description:

Lake Gippsland is one of a chain of lakes in Australia, near Melbourne. These lakes are called one of the wonders of the world and I must say, it is justified. The history of these lakes, or rather their perception by man, began in 1606, when distant navigators approaching the shores of Australia discovered and described the amazing waters of the chain of lakes on this continent: as the sun goes down, the water in Lake Gippsland and neighboring begins to emit blue light. Sailors, with their own superstition, dubbed this phenomenon "fire from the underworld."

Only 100 years later, this phenomenon has found a truly scientific explanation. The cause of the glow is bioluminescence - chemical reactions of life of living organisms inhabiting the waters of the lake. Bioluminescence releases a large amount of energy released as light. During periods of active glow, Lake Gippsland attracts a huge number of scientists looking for secrets that still hide the waters of the Australian lakes.
