Essendon Airport
Description:
Essendon Airport has gone down in Australian history forever as the place that was honored in 1954 to host a plane carrying Queen Elizabeth II on board. It was from here that she began her study tour of the country.
The decision to establish the civil airport of Essendon was made in 1921, and in 1923 it was officially opened. Until May 1966, it was the official airport of Melbourne, but lost it due to the opening of the new air hub Tullamarine. In 1995, the airport celebrated its 75th birthday, and on this occasion were arranged grand celebrations with air shows.
In 2001, the state handed over control of the airport to a private company, and since then the emphasis has been on cargo transportation. Currently, the airport is rarely used, mainly for flights inside Victoria and for special services (police and emergency medical care). There is a flight school at the airport.
Currently, the company-owner bought the land around the airport from the Commonwealth Government, and its main activity was directed not to the development of aviation, but to the commercial development of the territory.
