Novel Tower
Guglgasse 3, Industriegebiet Erdberg, Vienna, Austria
Description:
In 1995, the reconstruction of one of the four towers of gas-holders in the Viennese district of Zimmering was entrusted to the famous French architect Jean Nouvel. He became the author of the project of internal reconstruction of the tower A. The main condition for the transformation of gasometers from an industrial zone into a residential, office and entertainment one was the preservation of the historical exterior, so the appearance of the massive brick towers did not change, the roofs also remained domed with ventilation valves.
In October 2001, the renovated towers were opened. The new eleven-storey tower A, thanks to the project of Nouvel, became a shopping, entertainment and residential complex. If you look from above, you can see inside the former gas meter a round convex square in the center, from which 9 identical residential towers diverge, like a city in a city. Their sides are lined with well-polished metal. Since the dome of the roof the architect left transparent, the sun's rays freely penetrate inside and, reflected as in a mirror, represent a kind of play of light.
There is a parking lot in the underground part of Tower A. The convex mirror-glass platform is the roof of the shopping center located in the lower levels of the main building. Here in the ultra-modern interior there are many fashionable shops and cafes. The upper floors are designed for offices and living spaces.
