Augustinian church

Augustinerstra ß e 3, 1010 Wien, Austria

Description:

The church of the Augustinians, built in the XIV century according to the project of Dietrich von Pearn in the Gothic style, is now completely different from the church that was originally built for the Order of Non-possessors. Now it is available to visitors and pleases the eye with its beautiful Baroque style with Gothic elements.

Many memorable and significant events took place in this temple. For example, there was the wedding of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, the wedding of Maria Theresa and Franz of Lorraine, the wedding of Maria Louise and Napoleon, as well as numerous funerals.

Inside the temple there are tombstones of Maria Cristina, Maria Theresa, as well as the crypt of hearts in the chapel of St. George with 54 urns, which contain embalmed hearts of members of the imperial family. This temple for several centuries was the palace church of the Habsburg family.
