St. Peter's Church
Petersplatz, 1010 Wien-Innere Stadt, Austria
Description:
The Church of St. Peter or Peterskirche was built in Vienna in the second half of the 4th century on the site where the barracks of the Roman camp of Vindobon were located, but was subsequently destroyed. Today, tourists see the renovated Baroque church, founded in 1701.
Interestingly, the initiator of the laying of the church was King Leopold the First. The project and construction of the foundation were carried out by Gabriel Montani, but Lucas von Hildebrandt will complete the construction. Today, the church is located on Petersplatz, one of its sides overlooks Graben.
Note that, probably, Hildebrandt is the author of the facade of an elegant curved configuration, which is sandwiched between two bell towers, he is also the creator of a magnificent semi-oval dome, which eventually became covered with patina.
Tourists are primarily impressed by the rich interiors of the church, lush frescoes and stunning Baroque sculptures.
