Jewish Square

Wien, Austria

Description:

Jewish Square is a beautiful Viennese landmark that served as the center of a Jewish town in the 1400s. Nowadays, the square is one of the busiest places in the city, which is famous for its fun nightlife. Its main attractions are the medieval synagogue and museums telling about Jewish history in Vienna. Also, this place is popular because it was here that Johann Strauss composed the most famous work – the waltz “On the Blue Danube”.

In early 2000, a unique memorial was erected to commemorate the 60,000 Austrian Jews who were victims of the Holocaust. It was designed by artist Rachel Wildreed. The monument is a large cube cast from concrete. It contains thousands of books turned inwards, which describe the details of horrific events. It is enough to come to the Jewish Square once to imbue with the spirit here and understand that fascism cannot be justified in any way. This place will be interesting to those who are interested in these historical events, and just curious tourists and students.
