Fleischmarkt 13, Vienna, Austria
Description:
The Greek Orthodox Church in Vienna was founded in 1963. The building is made of red brick. The windows are beautifully carved, semicircular. Above the main church entrance there are saints. Inside it is decorated with a gilded sparkling altar.
The church was built in 1861, by architect Theophilus Hansen. The initiator of the construction of the temple was the Greek Orthodox community. Since 1963 it has been the Cathedral of Greek Orthodoxy in Austria. Orthodoxy in Austria came about through Greek merchants. They appeared in Vienna in the seventeenth century, and Orthodoxy was legalized in 1776. They had as many rights and freedoms as Roman Catholics.
Currently, the Greek Orthodox Diocese includes seven Austrian parishes, including two Viennese parishes.
