Heldenplatz Heroes' Square
Heldenplatz 21/4, 1010 Wien, Austria
Description:
Heldenplatz (Heroes Square) is located in the Austrian capital Vienna. The square became famous after the speech of Adolf Hitler, who announced the entry of Austria into the Third Reich.
The square is adjacent to the Hofburg Palace (the residence of the monarchs), which was built in the middle of the XIX century on the initiative of Emperor Franze Joseph.
Heldenplatz is bounded on the other three sides by the New Palace, the Leopold Corps and the Outer Fortress Gate, which is also called the Arch of Heroes. Perhaps that is why the square eventually became known as the Square of Heroes.
If you stand on Heldenplatz facing the northwest, you can see the Burgtheater, the Parliament building and the Town Hall. In the center of the square are statues of two Austrian princes Archduke Charles and Eugen of Savoy.
