Klosterneuburg Monastery

Stiftsplatz 1, Klosterneuburg, Austria

Description:

Klosterneuburg is a suburb of Vienna, located at the very Vienna Forest and at the foot of Mount Leopoldsberg. The city was founded by Margrave Leopold III, who placed his residence here, ordering to build a castle. Later, a village grew around the castle, which was called Neuburg (New Town), and a monastery of the Augustinians was founded nearby.

Klosterneuburg Monastery is one of the oldest in Austria. After the canonization of its founder Leopold III, it became a national shrine. The monastery church was built in the Baroque style, and in the XIX century two neo-Gothic towers were added to it. Throughout its centuries-old history, the monastery was a famous winemaking center, and now the Federal Institute of Viticulture operates in it.

The interior of the Baroque church with unique frescoes and an ancient organ from 1642 is of great artistic value. But the main treasure of the monastery is the Verdun Altar, it is considered the most significant work of art of the XII century.
