Monument against war and fascism
Albertinaplatz S, 1010 Wien, Austria
Description:
The monument against war and fascism was erected on Helmut Zilk Square on the site of a residential building destroyed by bombing in 1945, in the basement of which local residents were hiding, where they were buried alive. The monument was completed on 24 November 1988 by Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlik. As material he used granite, which was extracted by prisoners in the concentration camp Mauthausen.
The monument against war and fascism is made in the form of a gate, the so-called “Gate of power”. The right side of the sculpture is dedicated to all the victims of the war, and the left side is dedicated to the massacres that take place not only in camps and prisons, but also on ordinary streets. Images on the left are also dedicated to the victims of resistance. Standing next to the statue in the form of a Jew washing the street, reminiscent of the insults and persecution to which the people were subjected, and a pregnant woman without a face is a symbol of Austrians born after the war. The sculpture, titled “Orpheus Enters Hell,” was dedicated to all those who died during the bombing and resistance against nationalism.
