St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Vienna

Jauresgasse 2, 1030 Wien-Landstra ß e, Austria

Description:

Russians have lived in Austria for a long time. Most of them were diplomats and merchants. In addition to them, other Orthodox peoples lived here, for example, Greeks, Serbs, Romanians, Hungarians. In 1725, from St. Petersburg to Austria, together with ambassadors, 100 rubles a year were transferred to the priest, and the services themselves were held in a Greek church. 1762 is considered the year of the founding of the Orthodox Church in Vienna. He was originally in the house where the ambassador lived. It was not until 1803 that the marching church finally found its permanent building, the house of Baroness von Matt, on Gross Schulstrasse. And on October 15, 1893, the solemn laying of the first stone in the foundation of the church took place.

The temple was designed by Russian architect G.I. Kotov in the style of Russian-Byzantine architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries. The interior space has the shape of a cross inscribed in a square. The gilded iconostasis is made of cypress. Icons in the Byzantine style were made by Russian artists. In 1899 the temple was completely completed. In 1999, celebrations were held on the occasion of the centenary of the Orthodox Church in Vienna. At the temple there is a Sunday school for children. The schedule of services is on the temple website.
