Lake Sigrottd

Seegrotte Hinterbruhl Schaubergwerke GmbH, Grutschgasse 2a, A-2371 Hinterbruhl, Hinterbrühl, Austria

Description:

Lake Sigrotte is a former gypsum mine in Hinterbrühl, located 15 km south of Vienna. For many years after the disaster, the mine remained closed and only in the 1930s, on the initiative of enthusiasts, the underground lake became accessible to tourists.

The first access to Lake Seegrotte was opened in 1932. Almost from the very first day of the opening, the lake became one of the main attractions of Austria. It is visited annually by a large number of tourists (about 250 thousand people a year).

The entrance to the underground complex is a tunnel. At the end of it, the “rest room” is the warmest room in the mine. Then there is a small lake on the way. It is called Blue, its area is 300 square meters, depth is 3 m. You can see the Chapel of St. Barbara of the 19th century. Going deep down the steps, you can be on the shore of the underground Great Lake with an area of more than 6000 square meters. The lake is fed by seven springs, and since it has no natural runoff, the water is pumped out to maintain a constant level. The average depth of the lake is 1.2 m.

Every day there are excursions in several languages. They include a romantic motorboat ride on the lake (45 minutes).
