Monument to Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria

People's Park (Volksgarten), Vienna, Austria

Description:

Monument to Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria is an amazingly beautiful white marble statue installed in the Volkswagen Park, in the capital of Austria, the city of Vienna.

The monument to Empress Elizabeth (or Sissi, as her compatriots affectionately called her) was unveiled in 1907, nine years after her death. The Empress died prematurely when she was murdered on the streets of Geneva by Italian anarchist Luigi Luckeni.

The monument fully reflects the sad fate of Elizabeth: the statue created by Hans Bitterlik and Friedrich Ohmann strikes with sadness. The Empress is depicted sitting alone on a throne, surrounded by the greenery and water of Volkswagen Park. Low steps lead to the memorial, and the pedestal is decorated with stone roses of magnificent work. The height of the statue is only two and a half meters, but the beauty of the performance compensates for the lack of monumentality.

Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria was an extremely popular person in her time, and still enjoys great love of her fellow citizens. There are monuments dedicated to it all over Austria, but the marble statue in Volkswagen Park is by far the most beautiful of all.
