Mozart monument. burggarten
Description:
One of the most famous monuments of Mozart is located in the former Imperial Garden of Burggarten, in Vienna. Initially, it was created in 1896 by the architect V. Tilgner and was located on Albertinaplatz Square. In 1953 he was moved to Burggarten.
Paradoxically, 77 years passed from the foundation of the monument to its grand opening. There is an interesting story in the competition for the monument. During the first selection, the commission rejected all proposed sketches. At the second selection, the jury still voted for the project proposed by Edmund Hellmer, but the committee responsible for the construction of the monument to Mozart preferred the sketch of Victor Tilgner. At the same time, Tilgner was the head of this committee, which gave great reason for gossip and ridicule.
The monument is made of white Laazer marble in the Baroque style. The Mozart depicted on it rests carelessly on the score, and curly grapes and angels are carved around it.
Due to bombings during World War II, the monument was severely damaged and had to be removed for restoration. After full restoration in 1953, it was returned to the pedestal. Every spring before the pedestal are planted flowers that have the shape of a violin key.
