Vienna

Monument to V.A. Mozart

Burggarten, Vienna, Austria

Description:

It was a monument for which at that time it was very difficult to find a place. The site was discussed in both the Town Hall Park and the City Park, and after years of discussion, it found its place between the opera house and the Duke of Albrecht's palace. 77 years have passed from the foundation of the monument to the grand opening.

The competition for the monument has an interesting history. At the first selection, all sketches failed. And in the second, the professional jury chose the proposal of Edmund Hellmer. But he did not rejoice for long, because the association responsible for the construction - the Committee of the Mozart Monument, won the jury by a majority of votes and chose the sketch of Victor Tilgner. Whether it was an accident that Tilgner was a member of the jury or not, history is silent. However, it provided food for cartoonists and gossip.

The reliefs show scenes from the hilarious drama Don Giovanni, where Mozart is depicted as a child surrounded by his family. The dubious winner did not live to see the grand opening of his work in 1896 - he died 5 days before the opening.

Due to the bombing at the end of World War II, the monument had to be removed from its place in Albertinaplatz Square for restoration. In 1953, it was installed in its current location.
