Ignaz Seipel Square

Vienna, Austria

Description:

Ignatsi Seipel Square is located in the Fleischmarkt area, where the Greeks founded the meat market in 1220. At that time, the area served as the heart of the Orthodox community. Today, Fleischmarkt Street and the surrounding area are famous for night bars and clubs. Here is the famous tavern Griechenbeisl, where frequent visitors were composers Schubert, Brahms and Strauss.

In addition to the nightlife, the square, named after the Austrian Chancellor, has many famous institutions (for example: the Academy of Sciences, founded in the XVIII century - "Alte Universitä t", the famous house "Freskenraum", where you can see the frescoes of Franz Maulbertsch, on the outskirts of the western part of the square - "Great Hall", where Haydn debuted.

Here is the Jesuit Church (University Church). In the first chapel, located near the temple, the master Andrea Pozzo sculpted the image of St. Catherine. The interior of the church is fascinating: wonderful carved benches, spiraling columns of red and green look quite unusual.

Among other buildings stands the Greek Orthodox Church on Griechengasse. It looks especially interesting from the inside when it glows with lit candles.
