Graben Street
Description:
Graben Street is a famous pedestrian street in Vienna, laid on the site of a defensive moat, which is reflected in its name ("graben" translates as "moat"). It begins from the Shtok-im-Aizen square, and ends, resting on Tukhlauben street.
There are also historical sites on it. The plague pillar or column of the Holy Trinity is located right in the middle of the street. The pillar was laid in 1679 to commemorate the end of the plague epidemic through the prayers of Emperor Leopold I. Closer to Stefan Square is the Haas House, built in 1990 with a glass-metal facade. The appearance of this house in the historic center of the city caused a storm of indignation among the defenders of the architecture of Vienna. At the intersection of the street with Kertnerstrasse is a wooden pillar with nails driven into it. It appeared here thanks to the tradition that every merchant leaving the city had to drive a nail into a log.
Among the street shops there is a boutique of the famous brand Hermes, an exclusive perfume store Parfumerie J.B.Filz and one of the oldest European stores of children's toys Joseph Kober, which sells world-famous teddy bears.
