The gate of violence

Albertinaplatz 1, 1010 Wien, Austria

Description:

In the heart of Albertina Square is a monument commonly known as the “Gate of Violence”. The monument is installed on granite pedestals white marble blocks on which human figures are carved. Different poses mixed in the common "stone mess" of the body - on closer examination, this composition causes internal awe.

The monument "Gate of Violence" is another reminder of the terrible war that raged in Europe in the 40s of the twentieth century. It is not by chance that a place was chosen for the installation of the monument - before there was a residential house here. Once it was inhabited by wealthy gentlemen, and in the spring of 1945, during the heavy bombings to which Vienna was subjected, in the basement people tried to find salvation from the bombings. During one of the March bombings, an air bomb hit the house, destroying it and burying several hundred people under the rubble. Nobody managed to escape, and now there is a large mass grave right under the monument.
