High market
Description:
The Wedding Fountain (Vermä hlungsbrunnen) was built in 1732 from white marble by the architect I. E. Fischer von Erlach, commissioned by Emperor Leopold I in honor of his son, the future Joseph I, who happily returned after the War of the Spanish Succession. The fountain depicts the wedding of Marie and Joseph, led by the high priest, with Corinthian columns on the sides and gilded sunlight on top.
During the reconstruction of the insurance office building on the east side of the square, the artist Franz Mach realized his idea of watches as works of art in the Art Nouveau style. Twelve figures, personifying the history of Vienna and the time of day, pass over the street along the vault connecting two buildings: Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Charlemagne, Duke Leopold VI with Theodora of Byzantium, Walter von der Vogelweide, King Rudolf I with his wife Anna, architect of the Cathedral Hans Puxbaum, Emperor Maximilian I, Burgomaster A. von Liebenberg, Count Rudiger von Starchemborg, Prince Eugene, Maria Theresa with Emperor Franz I and Josef Gaid.
During the great parade of figures on the anchor clock (AnkerUhr), every day at 12 o'clock, bells sound, performing the music of that era.
